- De Valois was
- born Edris Stannus
- in Ireland, the
- daughter of an
- army officer who
- was killed in
- the 1914-18 war.
- She wanted to
- train as an artist,
- but decided on
- dance. She found
- work in opera
- and revue and,
- at her mother's
- suggestion,
- she changed
- her name
- #
- In 1923, Diaghilev
- spotted the young
- ballerina's
- singular talent
- and made Ninette
- de Valois one of
- his solo dancers
- with the Ballets
- Russes. She spent
- three years with
- the company. But
- at the age of 25,
- she was forced by
- polio to stop
- dancing. Still in
- love with dance,
- she founded her
- Academy of
- Choreographic
- Art in London
- #
- De Valois' personal
- ambitions as a
- ballerina were
- thwarted by pain
- but she burned
- with ambition
- for British ballet.
- In 1931 she and
- Lilian Baylis
- founded the Vic-
- Wells Ballet. De
- Valois created
- her own ballets
- there, notably
- Job, The Rake's
- Progress and
- Checkmate
- #
- In 1945, Ninette
- de Valois moved
- on once more, to
- Covent Garden.
- She was honoured
- as the principal
- architect of the
- Royal Ballet. And
- when Dame Ninette
- stepped down as
- its Director in
- 1963, she was
- succeeded by Sir
- Frederick Ashton
- #
- Deprived by
- illness of the
- opportunity
- to dance, de
- Valois poured
- her experience
- and energies
- into teaching
- and choreography.
- By now she was
- the embodiment
- of the spirit of
- the British ballet
- #
- In 1981, the
- Royal Ballet
- staged a
- triumphant
- anniversary
- performance of
- The Sleeping
- Beauty. Dame
- Ninette de
- Valois, still a
- life governor of
- the company,
- still tireless
- in her promotion
- of the ballet,
- pledged that
- new talent
- would be
- nurtured
- #
- If the young
- Ninette de Valois
- had grandiose
- ambitions, she
- was more than
- vindicated by
- time. And in old
- age, the Grand
- Dame of ballet
- was in reality
- anything but
- grand. Inter-
- viewers found
- her modest
- and accessible,
- though her com-
- manding presence
- demanded respect
- #
- Ninette de Valois
- was a visionary
- and a pioneer.
- The list of the
- talents she
- encouraged is
- a roll call of
- the greats:
- Ashton, Fonteyn
- and Nureyev, to
- name only the
- most outstanding.
- She outlived some
- of her brightest
- stars, while the
- Royal Ballet is her
- own assurance
- of immortality
